Obtaining the correct HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) licence is essential for driving larger vehicles professionally. The categories are structured based on vehicle weight and the ability to tow trailers.

• Medium-Sized Vehicles:
  • Category C1: Permits you to drive vehicles with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) between 3,500 and 7,500 kilograms, towing a trailer with a MAM of up to 750 kilograms.
  • Category C1+E: Allows you to drive a Category C1 vehicle with a trailer exceeding 750 kilograms MAM. However, the trailer’s MAM cannot exceed the unladen weight of the vehicle, and the combined MAM of both vehicle and trailer cannot exceed 12,000 kilograms.
• Large Vehicles:
  • Category C: Entitles you to drive vehicles with a MAM over 3,500 kilograms with a trailer having a MAM of up to 750 kilograms. This is the basic large goods vehicle licence.
  • Category C+E: This is the licence required to drive large goods vehicles over 3,500 kilograms MAM with a trailer having a MAM of over 750 kilograms. Aceing Your HGV Theory Test:

The HGV theory test is more comprehensive than the car theory test, reflecting the greater responsibility and complexity involved in driving large vehicles. It consists of three parts:

1. Multiple Choice Test: This section assesses your knowledge of a wider range of topics, including vehicle weights and dimensions, drivers’ hours and rest periods, vehicle loading and security, environmental regulations, and accident procedures, in addition to the Highway Code and traffic signs. The DVSA states that this test comprises 100 multiple-choice questions, and the pass mark is 85 out of 100.
2. Hazard Perception Test: Similar to the car theory test, this section tests your ability to spot developing hazards. However, the HGV hazard perception test features 19 video clips, each containing one or more developing hazards. You can score up to five points per hazard, and the pass mark is 67 out of 100.
3. Case Studies Test: This additional section is unique to large vehicle theory tests. It presents seven case studies, each followed by 6-8 questions (totaling around 50 questions). These case studies simulate real-life scenarios that HGV drivers might encounter, testing your understanding of regulations and safe procedures in practical contexts.
